Celtic art is perhaps best known for its complex interlaced motifs which give a lively, maze-like surface decoration to many objects.

The Early Celtic period (400-100BC) saw the development of swirls and tendrils, but it was in 6th Centure AD Ireland that the fantastic interwoven knot patterns were developed to their utmost. Excellent craftsmen, the Celts embellished jewelry, scabbards, harnesses, mirrors and stonework with their intricate designs.
